Charleston, South Carolina - April 8, 2002 - The South Carolina African American Tobacco Control Network, a nonprofit organization, announces the kickoff to the first capital campaign in the organization's history, "Dancin' For Dollars", which seeks to raise funds by the donation of ONE DOLLAR from each individual in local communities to help SAVE LIVES against tobacco related and cancer deaths. The total funds raised will be used for educational programs to promote tobacco use prevention and cancer awareness specifically in South Carolina African American communities.
The Facts . . .
According to the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, 25% of all South Carolinians are current smokers and 24.3% of African American adults are current smokers. 1 in every 5 African American high school students are current smokers. There are 4,100 people in South Carolina that die each year from smoking. By focusing on awareness of these issues "Dancin' For Dollars" will remind our youth and adults the importance of preserving life.
