Smoke Free HBCU's Policies

To be successful in working towards smoke free campuses or other work sites the following need to be in place:

  1. Quick Inventory
Do you already have policy on the books? Are they weak, do they need to be strengthened, who enforces them, what do they cover?
  2. Coalition Issues
Is there a group or coalition that will be responsible for working towards a policy

Who is represented, does group have the members needed to be successful in passing policies, is there a leader to organize activities, do you need to recruit additional members, training to speak persuasively on issue of smoke free policy, is coalition considered grassroots, does have good communication network ?

  3. Community /campus education and outreach
What steps are taken to retrieve information (surveys), do you have good data, how is your information being communicated to everyone, what are you looking to achieve is this spelled out clearly, who are the leaders that you need to have success, what timeline are you given the activities, are roles of those involved clearly defined, who is your opposition and how will the coalition/group neutralize their influence? Make sure information being use is current and from credible source.
  4. Media
Hat media outlets will you use, which ones are more supportive, have more influence
  5. Assistance
Rely on groups/people that have been successful or have expertise for support and information
